Ministry of Gender and Family Celebrates First Anniversary of Fiyavathi

Ministry of Gender and Family has celebrated the 1st Anniversary of the establishment of Fiyavathi children’s shelter.

Special activities were held for children and staff of Fiyavathi during the week-long celebrations held by the Ministry, which concluded with the official opening of an outdoor playground established by STO.

The Ministry gives high priority to ensure that children receive the necessary care and support required for their healthy growth and development. Since its establishment in 2016, the Ministry has also continued to engage with private sector and civil society organizations to provide additional support for the well-being of the children in Fiyavathi. Key notable achievements to date include:

  • Establishment of a medical room with full-time nurses and conducted health screenings for all children in Fiyavathi
  • Regular Islam and Quran classes and English language classes and provision of qualified teachers to assist children in their educational needs
  • Provision of psychosocial support to improve children’s emotional wellbeing
  • Regular basketball practices and weekly water sports activities to promote healthy growth and physical development of children

A total of 85 children below 10 years are currently living in Fiyavathi, which was inaugurated by His Excellency, President Yameen Abdul Gayyoom and First Lady, Madam Fathimath Ibrahim, on 17 February 2016.

The Ministry hopes to expand collaboration with private sector and civil society organizations to provide children under state care with additional opportunities to help them reach their full potential.
