“Ahan” Campaign sessions held in Kaafu Atoll to empower children against abuse

Ministry of Gender and Family has conducted a series of awareness sessions in all the islands of Kaafu Atoll under its “Ahan” Campaign, to prevent child abuse and empower children against all forms of violence.

A total of 833 students from Grades 4 to 8 participated in these sessions, which were conducted in three phases. A total of 271 students participated in the sessions of the first phase which was held in Kaashidhoo and Gaafaru from 7 to 8 February 2018. A total of 271 students also participated in the sessions of the second phase which was held from 2 to 3 May 2018 in Dhiffushi, Thulusdhoo and Huraa. In addition, 341 students participated in the sessions of the third phase which was held from 3 to 12 May 2018 in Gulhi, Maafushi, Guraidhoo and Himmafushi.

The students were provided information on how to protect themselves from abuse and neglect, ways to respond and report, and how to provide support for victims of child abuse.

 “Ahan” campaign was launched by the Ministry in 2015 to prevent child abuse and neglect, as over 50 percent of cases reported and attended by the Ministry every month includes cases of violence against children. The sessions, held in collaboration with Advocating the Rights of Children (ARC), have been conducted in all the islands of Vaavu Atoll, Meemu Atoll and Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll as well as Haa Dhaalu Kulhudhuffushi to date.
