“Violence Against Children has both social and economic implications” – Minister Zenysha

Minister of Gender and Family H.E. Zenysha Shaheed Zaki has stressed on the adverse social and economic impacts on the country as a result of violence against children and stated that the Government places a high priority to protect and empower children against all forms of violence. Minister Zenysha made this remark during her address to the nation on the occasion of the World Day for the Prevention of Child Abuse, broadcasted by the Public Service Media.

In her message, Minister Zenysha underscored the right of every child to be protected from acts of violence. Noting that 50 percent of reports made to the Ministry are cases of violence against children, she highlighted that statistics of the past four months alone reveal over 480 such cases, including child neglect, physical, emotional, sexual abuse.

Minister Zenysha also stated that “No act of violence against a child is justifiable and that all forms of violence against children can be prevented.” In addition, she noted the importance of increasing community awareness and emphasized that child victims should not suffer in silence without receiving support, in a small society like the Maldives.

Minister Zenysha further highlighted the need to recognize signs of abuse and alert the authorities, and provide assistance to child victims. In this regard, she noted that greater efforts are still required to prevent and respond to violence against children.

Minister Zenysha concluded her message by recognizing the important role of relevant institutions, civil society, individuals as well as social service workers of the Ministry, and appealed to all stakeholders to renew efforts to protect the rights of children.
