Cases Reported to and Attended by the Ministry in January 2019

Ministry of Gender, Family and Social Services received and attended to a total of 274 cases in January 2019.

Violence against children

  • A total of 128 cases were reported to and attended regarding violence against children, which amounts to 47 percent of the total cases received and attended in January 2019.
  • The most frequently reported cases in this category involve cases of negligence, of which 48 cases were reported during this period.
  • Other forms of violence against children include 28 cases of sexual abuse, 21 cases of physical violence, 11 cases of emotional abuse, 10 cases of witness to domestic violence, 7 cases of victims of cyber bullying, 1 case of victims of bullying and harassment and 1 case of commercial exploitation.

Child rights violations

  • A total of 14 cases were reported to and attended in this category in January 2019.
  • Reports include 12 cases of refusal of access to education and 2 cases of denial of birth registration.

Family issues

  • A total of 47 cases were reported to and attended in this category in January 2019.
  • Reports include 27 cases of custody or access, 12 cases of parenting issues and 3 cases of child maintenance.

Children in conflict with the law

  • 1 case of drug possession was reported to and attended regarding children in conflict with the law in January 2019.

Behavioural problems of children

  • A total of 19 cases were reported to and attended regarding behavioural problems of children in January 2019.
  • Reports include 8 cases of refusal to attend school and 6 cases of running away.

Gender based violence and domestic violence

  • A total of 47 cases involving gender based violence and domestic violence were reported to and attended in January 2019.
  • The most frequently reported cases involve forms of physical abuse, of which 21 cases were reported during this period.
  • Other cases reported in this category involve 14 cases of emotional or verbal abuse, 4 cases of intimidation, 3 cases of negligence, 3 cases of rape, 1 case of sexual abuse and 1 case of sexual harassment.

Care and support for elderly and persons with disabilities

  • A total of 15 cases were reported to and attended in this category in January 2019.
  • Reports include 8 cases regarding care and support to persons with disabilities and 7 cases related to care and support for elderly.

Suicidal behavior/ thoughts

  • 3 cases regarding self-harm and suicidal behavior were reported to and attended in January 2019.
