Ministry of Gender and Family has conducted a series of awareness sessions for a total of 983 students in all the islands of Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll under its “Ahan” Campaign, to prevent child abuse and empower children against all forms of violence.
The sessions targeted for students from Grades 4 to 8 were divided into three phases. A total of 433 students participated in the sessions of the first phase which was held in Thinadhoo from 1 to 3 August 2017. A total of 267 students participated in the sessions of the second phase which was held from 26 to 28 September 2017 in Hoadedhdhoo, Madaveli and Nadella. A total of 283 students participated in the sessions of the third phase which was held from 3 to 5 April 2017 in Fiyoari, Vaadhoo, Gaddhoo and Fares-Maathodaa.
The participants were provided information on how to protect themselves from abuse and neglect, ways to respond and report, and how to provide support for victims of child abuse.
The “Ahan” campaign sessions in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll were conducted in collaboration with Advocating the Rights of Children (ARC).
“Ahan” campaign was launched by the Ministry in 2015 to prevent child abuse and neglect, as over 50 percent of cases reported and attended by the Ministry every month includes cases of violence against children. Under this campaign, awareness sessions have been conducted in all the islands of Meemu Atoll and Haa Dhaalu Kulhudhuffushi to date.
