Ministry of Gender and Family has convened a special event today to mark the International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2016. At the event held at artificial beach this evening, a special swimming challenge was held between Para-Swimming Champions from Sri Lanka and members of the Maldives National Swimming Team. In addition, fun activities were held for children and persons with disabilities with assistance from swimming instructors.
Speaking at the event, Minister Zenysha noted the different challenges faced by persons with disabilities on a daily basis and urged public to take initiative at individual level to spend time with families with disabilities, provide assistance and promote their participation in society. She also expressed appreciation to everyone who contributes to protect and promote the rights and wellbeing of children and persons with disabilities.
Minister Zenysha also thanked all partners and sponsors of today’s event, including the Embassy of Sri Lanka to the Republic of Maldives, Mega Maldives Airlines, Swimming Association of the Maldives, Life Guard Association of the Maldives, STELCO, MWSC, PSM, New Lagoons, Sea Sports, Print Lab, Next Innovation and Personal Computers.
The International Day of Persons with Disabilities has been marked worldwide since 1992. This year’s theme is ‘Achieving 17 SDG goals for the future we want – greater inclusion for persons with disabilities’.
