Validation Workshop convened on “National Elderly Action Plan” to implement the National Policy for Older Persons

A Validation Workshop has been held to finalize the “National Elderly Action Plan” to implement the National Policy on Older Persons, with the participation from 23 institutions.

Over 34 participants, including senior executives, policy and technical-level officials representing government institutions, private sector and civil society organizations participated in the workshop held today at Hotel Jen.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the workshop, Minister Zenysha noted that within the past 6 months alone, the Ministry received 47 cases of mistreatment and abuse against elderly, including negligence, isolation, and physical and psychological abuse. Minister Zenysha also reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to provide immediate support and protection to victims of such violence.

Minister Zenysha further urged participants to deliberate on ways to strengthen the existing mechanisms to provide support and assistance to victims of elder abuse. She also recommended participants to focus their discussions on ways to encourage participation of senior citizens in decision making and within the community.

Minister Zenysha also launched the “Ranveyla Campaign Report” to celebrate two years of achievements towards the protection and promotion of elderly rights, through the ‘Ranveyla Campaign’ of the Ministry.

At the one-day validation workshop, participants reviewed activities outlined to support the 4 main areas of the National Elderly Policy – focused on “care and protection”, “independence and participation”, “health and well-being”, and “preparation for old age” –  and provided recommendations on additional activities to include in the Action Plan.
