Minister Zenysha undertakes an official visit to Lao PDR

Minister of Gender and Family H.E. Ms. Zenysha Shaheed Zaki has undertaken an official visit to Lao People’s Democratic Republic (PDR). During the visit, which took place from 22 to 25 December 2017, Minister Zenysha paid a courtesy call on the Minister of Labour and Social Welfare H.E. Mr. Sompheng Saysompheng. Discussions were held on the work of the two Ministries and exploring ways of collaboration between the two countries, in the areas of protecting the rights of children, women, the elderly and persons with disabilities.

During the visit, Minister Zenysha met with the President of The Lao Women’s Union Dr. Inlavanh Keobounphan, who briefed her on the programmes of the organisation in protecting the rights of women and promoting gender equality and the empowerment of women. She also visited and observed the services of the ‘Counselling and Protection Centre for Women and Children’, held discussions on ways to protect women and children against violence and shared the Ministry’s experience in this field. Minister Zenysha further met with the management of Lao Disabled Women’s Development Centre and observed the training and skill building programmes for women with disabilities. She also visited the Corporative Orthotic and Prosthetic Enterprises Centre (COPE) to learn about their specialized physical rehabilitation services to help people with mobility related disabilities.

Minister Zenysha also visited and observed the facilities of Deak Kum Pa Orphanage and Suan Luang Boarding School. She met with their management and held discussions on their efforts to protect the rights of the children under State Care. She also met with the children living in the shelters and observed their artwork and handicrafts.

As part of this official visit, Minister Zenysha paid a courtesy call on the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lao, H.E. Mr. Saleumxay Kommasith. The two Ministers held discussions on the developmental challenges faced by small states and explored ways to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries.
