Minister Zenysha has stated today, that “it takes remarkable courage for women to report violence against themselves and to seek protection, and in doing so, they are a source of hope for victims who suffer in silence.”
In an exclusive interview given to Public Service Media today to mark the activities of ‘16 Days of Activism,’ celebrated internationally every year from 25 November to 10 December, Minister Zenysha highlighted that every individual has a responsibility to report and provide support and assistance to women and girls who are victims of violence.
Minister Zenysha noted that the Ministry of Gender and Family receives similar cases from all atolls of the Maldives every month. She also stated that from the reported cases of violence against children, domestic violence and gender-based violence, the number of women and girls who are victims is relatively higher. Minister Zenysha further took note of the statistics which reveal that one in three Maldivian women, between the ages of 15-49, have experienced incidences of violence at least once in their lifetime.
Noting the empowerment of women and girls as one of the key priorities of the Government, Minister Zenysha highlighted the work being undertaken to increase female participation in social, economic and political spheres. She also emphasized the need for greater efforts in these fields, particularly to increase female participation at decision-making levels as well as non-traditional sectors.
The Ministry of Gender and Family has organized various activities including a panel discussion in collaboration with the Family Protection Authority and the Human Rights Commission of Maldives, which was broadcasted today by the Public Service Media, as well as a social media campaign specially dedicated to raise awareness during this year’s ‘16 Days of Activism.’ In addition, with the recognition that violence against women often occur at home, the Ministry also plans to conduct a door-to-door activity in two islands of Kaafu atoll, to raise awareness on this issue.
