Minister of Gender and Family Zenysha Shaheed Zaki notes with concern, reports of cases of exploitation of children and persons with disabilities in the Maldives, and strongly condemns such acts.
At a ceremony held at Hotel Jen to mark the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, Minister Zenysha highlighted reports of “violation of rights, incidences of neglect as well as other difficulties experienced by Persons with Disabilities.” Noting the need for greater efforts to provide them with support and assistance, Minister Zenysha also stated that an inclusive society with full participation of Persons with Disabilities will enhance the development of the nation.
Minister Zenysha stressed the importance of creating an environment that facilitates easy access to quality education and healthcare, to ensure the well-being and development of every child with disabilities. She also stated that under the Inclusive Education Policy, over 350 teachers had been trained to work with children with disabilities across the country, and highlighted health services and facilities provided by the Government, for persons with disabilities.
In addition, Minister Zenysha noted Government efforts to facilitate greater opportunities for persons with disabilities and aid their economic empowerment. In this regard, she also noted the provision of jobs at public companies, for over 270 persons with disabilities, under a special initiative of His Excellency President Yameen Abdul Gayoom.
Minister Zenysha highlighted the challenges and discrimination faced by persons with disabilities and urged the community to renew efforts to build a more inclusive society in the Maldives. She further emphasized the importance of working at an individual level as well as collectively, to prevent marginalization and facilitate greater opportunities for persons with disabilities.
