Ministry of Gender and Family, in collaboration with the Maldives Police Service, held a special ceremony at Iskandharu Koshi tonight, to mark the completion of the Gender Sensitization training programme conducted for investigation and frontline police officers working in all Atolls of the Maldives. The aim of this training programme was to raise awareness amongst police officers on women’s rights and gender equality, and provide information on the gender equality law.
Speaking at the closing ceremony, Minister of Gender and Family H. E. Zenysha Shaheed Zaki noted that the ministry had received reports of over 200 cases of gender based violence and domestic violence within the last six months alone. She further highlighted that sensitization of police officers on combating gender discrimination and developing skilled officers in this field is vital, particularly since Maldives Police Service is one of the key agencies working with the Ministry in attending to such cases.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Ahmed Saudhee awarded the certificates to a total of 219 officers who completed the training. This programme, funded by Asian Development Bank was held in seven regions of the Maldives from 21 May to 7 August 2017.
