Ministry of Gender and Family has concluded the second programme of the Advanced Sign Language Training. A total of 11 participants took part in this one month training programme, which aimed to facilitate easier access to services by minimizing communication barriers faced by persons with hearing impairments.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of this training conducted from 3 to 30 April 2018, held at the Maldives National University (MNU) last night, Minister of State for Gender and Family Dr Marium Jabyn stated that facilitating necessary skills to communicate with persons with disabilities increases their participation in the community. She further highlighted that through the Ministry’s discussions with organizations providing job opportunities for persons with disabilities, it has been recognized that familiarization with sign language contributes towards skill building and strengthening relationships in the workplace.
A number of organizations including EVE Clinic, Maldives Blood Services, Maldives National University, Victim Support Unit of Maldives Police Service, Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) and State Electric Company Ltd (STELCO) participated in the training.
The Ministry has trained over 270 people in this field to date, including 34 participants who completed the first batch of the Advanced Sign Language Training.
