The Maldives co-hosted a High Level Side-Event on “Ending Violence against Children” with Estonia and Nigeria today, in partnership with the Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Violence against Children, and the Global Partnership to End Violence against Children.
The event, moderated by Minister of Gender and Family Ms Zenysha Shaheed Zaki brought together countries across regions, to share different perspectives, challenges, prevention models and innovative strategies for preventing violence against children.
In her keynote statement, Minister Zenysha reflected on the work of the Government of Maldives in the field, including the country’s first ever National Conference on Violence against Children, in which a two-year National Action Plan was endorsed by stakeholders. While acknowledging the challenges in addressing violence against children, Minister Zenysha emphasized the importance of collaboration and partnerships in responding and facilitating protection as well as in prevention efforts.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Estonia, His Excellency Mr. Sven Mikser and the Minister of Defense of Nigeria Brig.Gen. (ret) Mansur Dan Ali also spoke at the event as panelists. The event also showcased a video on children’s perspectives on addressing violence against children, which was prepared by the Government of Maldives in partnership with UNICEF.
