Safe Homes

Women and children who are victims of domestic violence, abuse and neglect are provided temporary shelter in Safe Homes established at the Family and Children’s Service Centres (FCSCs).

The mandate of Safe Homes include safeguarding the rights assured in the Constitution of the Maldives to women and children who are provided temporary shelter and working with other relevant State agencies to reintegrate them back to their community, as well as providing psychosocial support, if required.

Currently there are four Safe Homes and they are located in H.Dh Kulhudhufushi, G.Dh Thinadhoo, Sh. Funadhoo and S. Hithadhoo. The Safe Homes are annexed to the FCSCs and the overall management of the institutions is mandated to the Ministry of Gender and Family.

Children’s Shelters

Children taken into State Care in the Maldives are provided shelter in the Children’s Homes Kudakudhinge Hiya and Amaan Hiya in Villingili and Fiyavathi in Hulhumale’. The overall management of the Children’s Shelters is mandated to the Ministry of Gender and Family.

The main aim of these institutions is to provide a safe, secure and enabling environment for vulnerable children who have been subjected to various forms of neglect and abuse and have no other means of primary care.

The first residential care facility for children, Kudakudhinge Hiya was opened in May 2006, and Amaan Hiya was established adjacent to the shelter to accommodate more children.

With the increase in the number of children taken into state care, the government established a third facility, Fiyavathi in February 2016 and the shelters now specialize as a home for children of different age groups. As of August 2017 Kudakudhinge Hiya and Amaan Hiya accommodates 66 children aged 13 – 18 years and Fiyavathi accommodates 100 children below the age of 13.

Get Involved

The Ministry gives high priority to ensure that children living in shelters receive the care and support necessary for their growth and healthy development.

The Ministry welcomes the participation of individuals, civil society and private sector to partner with and support the Ministry to further enhance the lives of children living in shelters and provide them with better opportunities. There are various ways to get involved, including making a donation to shelters, providing a sponsorship, or organizing an activity or event for the children.

Sponsorship

      *   Sponsor an additional care worker

With the increase in babies and toddlers taken into State Care and as this is a critical stage in the physical, cognitive, emotional and social development of children, the Ministry welcomes contributions towards sponsoring additional caregivers for babies and toddlers to provide them with better care and support.

      *   Sponsor an additional teacher

As many of the children who are taken into State Care require additional support in their education outside of the school system, the Ministry welcomes contributions towards sponsoring additional teachers to help improve children’s reading and writing skills and expand their knowledge.

      *   Sponsor a program for the children

The Ministry gives high priority to ensure that children living in shelters are provided with equal opportunities for their healthy growth and development. In this regard, the Ministry welcomes contributions towards sponsoring sports, arts and recreational programmes for the children.
